Directions From Durban (Approx 2 hours):
Take the N3 from Durban.
Then take the Estcourt south off ramp, turn right towards Estcourt. Go past the Bacon Factory, over the steel bridge and continue on that road. Go through the robot and do a 90 degree “dog’s leg” at the Nestle factory (Harding Street). Stay on this road though 4 robots. Should you need fuel, there is an Engen garage on the left just before you leave town. You are on the “R103 / Frere” Road.
As you leave town, you will come to one isolated robot which leads into the residential area. Keep going straight. 1.5km from this robot, you will reach a cross road. Turn Right here – as you turn, you will see the sign “(R74) Weenen”. This road goes through the Weenen Game Reserve. Travel this road for +- 26kms, through the game reserve, until you reach a T-Junction.
Turn left onto the R74 towards Colenso and travel for +- 5kms until you see the sign for STONEY RIDGE on your right hand side. Take this turn (cross cattle grid onto dirt road) and continue on this road until you go past the school on your right where the road forks. Take the RIGHT-HAND fork . Continue approximately 6km on this ‘main’ road until you reach the camp. Note that you will cross a dry river bed (rock base) on the way to camp – you ARE still on the correct road – simply keep going!
Directions From Joburg (Approx 4 hours):
Take N3 highway to Durban. Go over Van Reenen and continue.
Take the Ladysmith(R103) off ramp (just before the main Tugela toll gate) – Exit “246”. Go through the smaller tollgate. Continue on straight. Go past a road on left to “Peacetown”. Go over a large bridge – you will see the Railway bridge on your left running parallel. You will then get some “chimney stacks” on the left. Turn right very shortly thereafter onto the R103 – “Durban / Colenso”. Keep on this road – do not take the N11 exit. You will now be joining up with a larger road. Pass the Ladysmith testing grounds on the right. The Bergville road comes in on your right here – just keep going straight. Go though local settlement. Wind down into a valley where you will see 3 “power stations”. You will pass a road on left – “Ezakheni Thukela Heights” – keep straight. Do NOT take the slip road to Colenso. Go over the large Tugela river. Immediately after the Tugela river bridge, take the offramp up left to the R74 (says Weenen / Greytown (rusted sign) – also a sign for Ambleside). At the Stop Street – turn left. Go past a “power station” on your left. Then cross a cattle grid into the Thukela Biosphere. You will see “Umsuluzi” Game Reserve on your right. Cross the “Bloukrans” river. Continue up hill. As you start going down again you see the sign for STONEY RIDGE on your left. Take this turn (cross cattle grid onto dirt road) and continue on this road until you go past the school on your right where the road forks. Take the RIGHT-HAND fork through the gate to “Phumula Bush Camp”. Continue approximately 5km on this ‘main’ road until you reach the camp. Note that you will cross a dry river bed (rock base) on the way to camp – you ARE still on the correct road – simply keep going!
